Total Skills CPD Electrical Safe Isolation Course – 1 Day CPD Training
Our 1-day Electrical Safe Isolation Course is a practical CPD workshop held at our Nottingham training centre. The syllabus covers the full safe isolation procedure for both single-phase and three-phase electrical installations, mapped to HSE Guidance Note GS38, the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989, and BS 7671. Who this course is for: Qualified electricians returning to the trade, maintenance engineers, facilities managers, commercial landlords, trade trainees, PAT testers, solar-PV installers, and any competent person who needs to isolate circuits safely at work. No prior qualification is required — just a willingness to learn and respect the wiring. What you'll cover: - The 10-step safe isolation procedure practised hands-on - GS38 voltage-indicator and test-lead requirements (finger guards, fused tips, approved probe spacing) - Proving dead using a known voltage source - Single-phase isolation at the consumer unit for radial and ring final circuits - Three-phase isolation at TP&N distribution boards for commercial and industrial settings - Locking off and permit-to-work fundamentals - Legal context under EAWR 1989 and BS 7671 (2022 A2) What you'll leave with: A Total Skills CPD certificate of attendance recording 6 CPD hours, the confidence to carry out safe isolations across domestic, commercial, and industrial settings, and familiarity with GS38-compliant test equipment. Location: Arnold Business Centre, Brookfield Road, Arnold, Nottingham NG5 7ER. Free on-site parking, good transport links from Derby, Leicester, Birmingham, and Sheffield.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the 10-step safe isolation procedure?
The 10 steps are: (1) identify the circuit, (2) switch off the supply, (3) verify you have isolated the correct circuit, (4) select an approved voltage indicator, (5) prove the indicator works on a known live source, (6) test the conductor for dead, (7) prove the indicator again on a known source, (8) lock off the isolator, (9) apply warning labels, and (10) issue a permit to work where required. The course walks through each step and you practise them hands-on.
Does this course cover three-phase safe isolation?
Yes — we cover both single-phase and three-phase safe isolation. For three-phase we work through isolation at a TP&N distribution board, verifying dead across all permutations of phases, neutral, and earth, in commercial and industrial scenarios.
What is GS38?
GS38 is an HSE Guidance Note on electrical test equipment for use by electricians. It specifies requirements for voltage indicators, test leads, probes, fused tips, and finger barriers. The course demonstrates GS38-compliant kit and explains why each feature matters when working on potentially live equipment.
Is the certificate recognised?
The certificate is issued by Total Skills Training and records 6 CPD hours of attendance. It is not a regulated awarding-body qualification, but it is widely accepted as evidence of continuing professional development by employers and trade bodies across the UK.
Do I need any prior qualifications to attend?
No. The course is designed to be accessible to anyone — qualified electricians refreshing their knowledge, non-electrical trades that sometimes need to isolate circuits, landlords, and trainees. No exam at the end, no prior qualification required.
Is this course a regulated qualification?
No — we offer this deliberately as a Total Skills CPD course rather than a regulated qualification. The content mirrors what an accredited course would cover, but without the awarding-body paperwork, which keeps the price low and the booking process simple.
Where is the course held and is parking available?
Our training centre is at Arnold Business Centre, Brookfield Road, Arnold, Nottingham NG5 7ER. On-site parking is free and plentiful. Full directions and a video guide are available on our Locate Us page.
Can my employer pay by invoice?
Yes — when you reach the booking page, select "Business booking" and you'll have the option to request an invoice. We'll issue a formal invoice to your company and confirm the booking once payment is received.
