Everything you need to know about becoming an electrician
Yes. Our accelerated City & Guilds courses let you qualify without a traditional 4-year apprenticeship. You complete the same nationally recognised qualifications — 2365, 2391, 18th Edition, and AM2 — through intensive, hands-on training. Many of our students are career changers who qualify in under 12 months.
With our full pathway, you can achieve JIB Gold Card status in 18–24 months. Individual courses range from 1 day (18th Edition) to 16 weeks (Level 3 2365). The exact timeline depends on which qualifications you need and whether you study full-time or part-time.
Newly qualified electricians typically earn £25,000–£32,000. With experience, this rises to £38,000–£45,000. Self-employed electricians regularly earn £50,000–£70,000, and specialists in EV charging or solar PV can command £45,000–£55,000. Earnings vary by region and specialism.
No prior electrical experience or formal qualifications are required to start our Level 2 courses. Basic numeracy and literacy are helpful, but we welcome complete beginners. Our tutors will support you from the very first day.
Yes. We offer flexible monthly payment plans on all courses, letting you spread the cost over 3–12 months. We also accept full upfront payment, employer-sponsored payments, and ELCAS funding for military personnel.
Absolutely. We offer weekend sessions specifically designed for people who are working full-time. Many of our students complete their training around existing jobs, gradually transitioning into their new career.
ELCAS funding is available for serving and ex-military personnel, covering up to £2,000 per qualification. The City & Guilds Foundation also offers bursaries that eligible learners can apply for directly. Contact us to discuss which funding options apply to your situation.
Our fully-equipped training centre is in Arnold, Nottingham (NG5 7ER), easily accessible from Derby, Leicester, Sheffield, Birmingham, and Leeds. The centre has dedicated practical workshops with real-world electrical installations for hands-on training.
