The Next Step on Your Electrician Journey

The City & Guilds 2365 Level 3 Diploma in Electrical Installations builds on your Level 2 foundation, taking you into advanced electrical theory and hands-on practical skills. This is the second essential qualification on the pathway to becoming a fully qualified electrician with your JIB Gold Card.

Who Is This Course For?

  • Level 2 graduates — If you've completed the 2365 Level 2 Diploma (or equivalent such as 2330 Level 2 or 2360 Part 1), this is your natural next step.

  • Career changers progressing through the pathway — Many of our learners started with no electrical experience at Level 2 and move straight into Level 3 to maintain momentum.

  • Industry workers formalising their qualifications — If you're already working in electrical but need Level 3 to progress towards your NVQ and Gold Card.

  • Employers upskilling their workforce — We work with companies across the UK who book this course for their employees. In-centre practical days can be scheduled flexibly around your business needs, on weekdays or weekends.

How the Course Works

This is a hybrid course combining flexible online theory with intensive hands-on practical training at our Nottingham centre. Study the theory units at your own pace through our online learning platform — available 24/7 on desktop, or via our mobile app for iOS and Android, with no live sessions to attend. When you're ready, book your in-centre practical days at times that suit you.

In-Centre Training & Assessments

You'll need approximately 8 to 9 days at our training centre, depending on your existing practical skills. Level 3 practical work is more intensive than Level 2, covering fault diagnosis and rectification, inspection and testing procedures, and electrical systems design. We offer unlimited training days, so you can attend as many sessions as you need until you feel fully confident, at no additional cost.

In-centre days are available on both weekdays and weekends, giving you complete flexibility to fit training around work or other commitments. For employers booking multiple employees, we can arrange group sessions on dates that work for your team.

The course includes multiple-choice exams which are normally taken at the centre. If you prefer, these can also be sat remotely with online invigilation for a small additional fee.

What You'll Learn

The course covers advanced topics including three-phase electrical systems, power factor correction, and harmonics. You'll develop expertise in fault diagnosis and rectification, learn inspection and testing procedures to BS 7671 standards, and understand how to design electrical installations for domestic, commercial, and industrial environments. You'll also learn to complete and interpret electrical installation certificates, condition reports, and minor works certificates.

Inspection & Testing Skills

A key component of Level 3 is comprehensive training in initial verification and periodic inspection procedures. You'll use industry-standard test equipment including multifunction testers and insulation resistance testers, gaining the practical competence that employers and industry bodies require.

Your Career Pathway

After completing Level 3, you're ready for the City & Guilds 2357 NVQ Level 3 — the workplace-based qualification that, combined with the AM2 assessment, leads to your JIB Installation Electrician Gold Card. This is the standard route for career changers and new entrants to become fully qualified electricians.

ELCAS Funding

This course is eligible for ELCAS (Enhanced Learning Credits) funding for serving and former Armed Forces personnel. Total Skills is an approved ELCAS provider (Provider Number: 12999), offering up to 80% financial support.

Flexible Payment Options

We offer interest-free payment plans with no credit checks required. Pay a deposit to secure your place, then spread the remaining cost over manageable monthly instalments. We also offer a discount for paying in full upfront.

The City & Guilds 2365-03 Level 3 Diploma in Electrical Installations is a Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) Level 3 qualification regulated by Ofqual (number 600/5499/2). It builds on the Level 2 foundation and covers three-phase systems, fault diagnosis, and installation design — the technical knowledge required for professional electrician status and ECS Gold Card eligibility.

Who Is This Course For?

The Level 3 is for anyone who has completed the Level 2 Diploma (or equivalent) and wants to progress towards full electrician status. Most students take the Level 3 immediately after Level 2, either as individual courses or as part of the Level 2 and 3 Diploma Package. The Level 3 is also taken by experienced electrical workers who hold older qualifications and need to update to the current standard. You must have a solid understanding of Level 2 content — electrical science, circuit types, and safe working practices — before starting. Like the Level 2, the course uses a hybrid model — online theory at your own pace combined with practical workshops at our Nottingham training centre. This means you can fit study around work or family commitments while still getting the hands-on experience that employers value.

What This Qualification Unlocks

The Level 3 Diploma is where you move from understanding how electrical installations work to designing and diagnosing them. The course covers three-phase power systems, complex circuit design, fault diagnosis and rectification, and the principles behind inspection and testing. After completing Level 2 and Level 3, you progress to the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations (2382), Inspection and Testing (2391), and then the NVQ Level 3 with AM2 assessment — the final steps to your Installation Electrician Gold Card. To register with a competent person scheme (NICEIC, NAPIT, ELECSA) for Part P self-certification, you need the NVQ Level 3 — the diplomas alone are no longer sufficient.

Career and Earning Potential

Holding both the Level 2 and Level 3 Diplomas places you firmly on the Gold Card pathway and qualifies you for higher-paid employed roles while you complete your NVQ. The diploma is a prerequisite for Inspection and Testing (2391), while specialist courses in EV charging (2921) and solar PV now require the NVQ Level 3 as a minimum. Self-employed electricians with the full pathway completed (including NVQ and Gold Card) regularly earn £50,000 and above, with specialists in green technologies charging £300 to £500 per day.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the entry requirements for the Level 3 Diploma?

You must hold the City & Guilds 2365 Level 2 Diploma in Electrical Installations (or equivalent such as 2330 Level 2 or 2360 Part 1). A good standard of English and basic maths is also required. You must be 18 or over to enrol. If you are close to completing Level 2, contact us to discuss early enrolment options.

How many days will I need to attend the training centre?

Most learners need between 8 and 9 days at our training centre, depending on their existing skill level. Level 3 practical work is more intensive than Level 2, covering fault diagnosis, inspection and testing, and systems design. We offer unlimited training days — you can attend as many sessions as needed until you feel fully confident, at no extra cost. Sessions are available on both weekdays and weekends. Learners travel from across the UK — you only need to be at the centre for practical days.

How long does the Level 3 course take to complete?

Most learners complete the course in 4 to 8 months, with the average being around 5 to 6 months. The online theory is entirely self-paced, so you can study around work or family commitments. Your in-centre practical days are booked when you're ready.

Will I be a fully qualified electrician after Level 3?

The Level 3 Diploma is the second essential qualification on your pathway. After completing both Level 2 and Level 3, you need the City & Guilds 2357 NVQ Level 3 — a workplace-based qualification requiring evidence of on-site experience. Once you hold all three qualifications, you can take the AM2 assessment and apply for your JIB Installation Electrician Gold Card.

How does the hybrid online learning work?

You complete all theory content through our online learning platform at your own pace — available 24/7 on desktop or via our mobile app for iOS and Android, with no live sessions to attend. Our expert tutors provide one-to-one support via phone, email, and video call. When you're ready for practical training, you book in-centre days at times that suit you.

What payment options are available?

We offer interest-free payment plans with no credit checks. Pay a deposit to secure your place and spread the rest over monthly instalments. We also offer a discount for paying in full upfront. Employer-funded and company invoicing available on request.

Can my employer book this course for me or my team?

Absolutely. We work with companies across the UK who fund training for their employees. We can arrange group sessions on dates that work for your team, including weekends. Contact us to discuss employer bookings and group pricing.

Is this course eligible for ELCAS funding?

Yes. This course is eligible for ELCAS (Enhanced Learning Credits) funding for serving and former Armed Forces personnel. Total Skills is an approved ELCAS provider (Provider Number: 12999), offering up to 80% financial support. You must have completed at least 4 years of service to be eligible. Contact us for help with your application.

What practical training is included?

The course includes intensive hands-on practical training at our fully equipped training centre. You'll cover fault diagnosis and rectification, inspection and testing procedures using industry-standard equipment, and electrical systems design. Each session is limited to small groups for one-to-one attention. Your practical assessments are also completed at the centre. We offer unlimited training days so you can practise until you're confident.

What happens after I complete Level 3?

You receive your City & Guilds Level 3 Diploma certificate and can progress to the NVQ Level 3 (2357) — the workplace-based qualification that leads to your JIB Gold Card. Many learners are already working on-site with their ECS card while completing Level 3, so they can begin gathering NVQ evidence straight away.

When can I start?

Straight away! As soon as your enrolment is confirmed and payment or deposit is received, you get instant access to the online learning platform. There's no waiting for a term or cohort to begin — you can log in and start studying the same day. Many of our learners begin in the evening after enrolling that morning.

Is the Level 3 Diploma worth the investment?

The Level 3 is required for the NVQ, AM2, and Gold Card — without it you cannot become a fully qualified electrician or register with NICEIC/NAPIT. At £2,650, the cost is recoverable within the first few months of qualified work at £35,000–£45,000 per year.
