Electrician Course FAQs

Common questions about our electrical training courses, entry requirements, and career outcomes

What electrician courses do you offer?
We offer 10 City & Guilds accredited courses covering the full electrician training pathway: Level 2 Diploma in Electrical Installations (2365), Level 3 Diploma in Electrical Installations (2365), NVQ Level 3 Electrotechnical (2357), 18th Edition Wiring Regulations (2382), 2391 Inspection & Testing, PAT Testing (2377-77), EV Charging Installation (2921), Large-Scale EV Charging Infrastructure (2921), Solar PV & Battery Storage Installation, and our combined Level 2 & 3 Diploma Package. Each course is designed to give you industry-recognised qualifications that employers and registration bodies accept.
How long does it take to become a qualified electrician?
Through our fast-track route, you can complete the full qualification pathway in 18 to 24 months. The Level 2 Diploma takes around 17 days of practical training plus online theory study. The Level 3 Diploma adds a further 12 days. You will also need the 18th Edition (online, self-paced), the NVQ Level 3 for on-site competence, and must pass the AM2 assessment to achieve your JIB Gold Card and work independently. Many of our students complete the pathway while continuing to work in their current job.
Do I need any experience or qualifications to start?
No prior electrical experience or formal qualifications are required. Our Level 2 Diploma in Electrical Installations is designed for complete beginners and career changers — we take you from zero knowledge to qualified. Basic numeracy and literacy are helpful, but our experienced tutors provide full support from day one. Around 70% of our students are career changers with no electrical background.
Are your courses City & Guilds accredited?
Yes. Total Skills is an approved City & Guilds centre (Centre No. 009512) and all our electrical qualifications carry full City & Guilds accreditation. We are also JIB-approved, which means our courses are recognised across the UK electrical industry for employment, self-employment, and registration with bodies like NICEIC and NAPIT.
How much do electrician courses cost?
Course prices vary depending on the qualification. Short courses like the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations start from around £400, while comprehensive programmes like the Level 2 & 3 Diploma Package are priced competitively with flexible payment plans available over 3 to 12 months. We also accept employer-sponsored payments, ELCAS funding for armed forces personnel, and full upfront payment. Visit each course page for current pricing and payment options.
Can I train part-time or at weekends?
Yes. We offer both weekday and weekend course dates, plus a hybrid learning format where you study theory online at your own pace and attend our Nottingham centre for intensive practical sessions. This flexibility means you can gain your qualifications without leaving your current job. The 18th Edition course is available fully online, so you can study around your schedule.
What is the difference between Level 2 and Level 3 electrical courses?
The Level 2 Diploma (2365) is the foundation course covering electrical science, health and safety, installation methods, and basic circuit design. It is where everyone starts. The Level 3 Diploma (2365) builds on Level 2 with advanced topics including inspection and testing principles, fault diagnosis, complex circuit design, and the requirements of BS 7671. You need Level 2 before progressing to Level 3. Together they form the core knowledge needed to become a qualified electrician.
Where does training take place?
Our fully-equipped training centre is in Arnold, Nottingham (NG5 7ER), with dedicated practical workshops containing real-world domestic and commercial electrical installations. We are easily accessible via the M1 motorway (Junction 26) and regularly welcome students from across the East Midlands and beyond — including Derby, Leicester, Sheffield, Lincoln, Peterborough, Northampton, Birmingham, and Coventry. Theory components can be studied online from home.
Do you offer EV charging and solar panel courses?
Yes. We offer three green energy courses: the EV Charging Installation course (City & Guilds 2921-31/32/33), which qualifies you to install domestic EV charge points; the Large-Scale EV Charging Infrastructure course (2921-34) for commercial and fleet installations; and the Solar PV & Battery Storage Installation course. These are among the fastest-growing specialisms in the electrical industry, with strong demand driven by the UK net zero targets.
What career opportunities are available after qualifying?
After completing your electrical training, you can pursue employment with an electrical contractor, join a large company as an in-house electrician, or set up as a self-employed electrician. Qualified electricians in the UK earn between £35,000 and £55,000 per year, with self-employed rates often higher. You can also specialise further in areas like EV charger installation, solar PV, inspection and testing, fire alarms, or data centre work — each specialism can increase your earning potential significantly.
