Total Skills CPD Solar PV CPD Course – 2 Day Practical Roof Installation

Our 2-day Solar PV CPD Course is held at our Nottingham training centre and mixes classroom sessions with hands-on workshop practicals, centred on installation work on our purpose-built indoor training roof. It explains how solar PV systems really work — panels, mounting systems, inverters, generation and export — and lets you fit them yourself under the guidance of experienced installers. Who this course is for: Roofers and roofing contractors who want to understand solar PV before offering it to customers, builders and tradespeople looking to add solar to their skill set, career-changers exploring the renewables industry, office-based staff and anyone selling solar equipment who wants to understand the products they work with, and homeowners or facilities staff curious about how these systems work. No prior qualification or experience is required — the course is open to anyone. What you'll cover: - How a solar PV system works end to end: panels, DC/AC conversion, inverters, generation metering and export - Roof types, structures and weatherproofing considerations for solar installations - Mounting systems: rails, hooks, clamps and fixings for tiled roofs - Hands-on panel installation on our purpose-built training roof - Safe working practices when working at height and around electrical equipment What you'll leave with: A Total Skills CPD certificate of attendance, practical on-roof installation experience, and a clear understanding of how solar PV systems work and are installed. This is an awareness-level CPD course — it does not qualify you as a professional solar PV installer. Location: Arnold Business Centre, Brookfield Road, Arnold, Nottingham NG5 7ER. Free on-site parking, good transport links from Derby, Leicester, Birmingham, and Sheffield.

Who this course is for

Roofers and roofing contractors who want to understand solar PV before offering it to customers; builders and tradespeople looking to add solar to their skill set; career-changers exploring the renewables industry; office-based staff and anyone selling solar equipment who wants to understand the products they work with; and homeowners or facilities staff curious about how these systems work. If you are already a qualified electrician looking for the regulated installer qualification, see our City & Guilds Solar PV & Battery Storage course (2922/2923) — note this CPD course is not a route to that qualification. Not an electrician but thinking about a career in renewables? Our electrician training pathway is where the professional route starts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need any experience or qualifications to attend?

None at all. The course is open to anyone — roofers, builders and other trades, career-changers, office-based staff, people selling solar equipment who want to understand the products, and homeowners curious about how solar PV works. There is no exam; you attend, take part in the practical, and receive a Total Skills CPD certificate of attendance.

Is this course a regulated qualification?

No — this is a Total Skills CPD course, not a regulated awarding-body qualification, and it does not qualify you as a professional solar PV installer. The certificate records your attendance as continuing professional development.

What's included in the £300 course fee?

Two full days of tuition mixing classroom sessions with hands-on workshop practicals on our purpose-built indoor training roof, all tools, equipment and PPE, and your Total Skills CPD certificate of attendance. The fee is £300 per person including VAT.

What will I learn on the course?

How a solar PV system works end to end — panels, DC/AC conversion, inverters, generation metering and export — plus roof types and weatherproofing considerations, mounting systems (rails, hooks, clamps and fixings for tiled roofs), and safe working practices. The practical centrepiece is installing panels yourself on our indoor training roof.

What should I wear or bring?

Safety shoes or boots are required for the workshop sessions, along with comfortable work clothing suitable for practical work on a roof structure. All other PPE, tools and equipment are provided at the centre.

When and where is the course held?

At our Nottingham training centre (Arnold Business Centre, Brookfield Road, Arnold, Nottingham NG5 7ER), 09:30–16:00 on both days. Free on-site parking, with good transport links from Derby, Leicester, Birmingham and Sheffield.

Can my employer pay by invoice?

Yes — on the booking page select "Business booking" and you'll have the option to request a VAT invoice. We'll issue a formal invoice to your company and confirm the booking once payment is received.

Do I need any experience or qualifications to attend?

None at all. The course is open to anyone — roofers, builders, other trades, career-changers, office-based staff, people selling solar equipment, and homeowners who simply want to understand how solar PV systems work. There is no exam; you attend, take part in the practical, and receive a CPD certificate of attendance.

I work in an office or sell solar equipment — is this course relevant to me?

Yes — it's ideal. You'll come away understanding how a solar PV system actually works end to end (panels, inverters, generation and export), what an installation involves on the roof, and the terminology installers and customers use. That makes conversations with customers, suppliers, and installers much more confident.

I'm a roofer — what will I get out of this course?

You'll learn exactly how solar PV mounting systems interface with a tiled roof — rails, hooks, clamps, fixings, and weatherproofing — and fit panels yourself on our purpose-built training roof. It puts you in a strong position to offer solar-ready roofing work or partner with qualified installers.

Is this a regulated qualification?

No — this is a Total Skills CPD course, not a regulated awarding-body qualification, and it does not qualify you as a professional solar PV installer. The certificate records your attendance as continuing professional development. The regulated installer qualification (City & Guilds 2922/2923) is a separate course for qualified electricians.

How hands-on is the course?

The course mixes classroom sessions with hands-on workshop practicals. The centrepiece is practical installation on our purpose-built indoor training roof — you'll handle real panels, mounting rails, and fixings, and see inverters up close. Being indoors, the practical runs whatever the weather.

Are there any physical requirements?

You need to be physically able to climb onto and work on our indoor training roof safely. PPE is provided. Learners must be 18 or over.

What should I bring or wear?

Safety shoes or boots are required for the workshop sessions, along with comfortable work clothing suitable for practical work on a roof structure. All other PPE, tools, and equipment are provided at the centre.

Where is the course held and is parking available?

Our training centre is at Arnold Business Centre, Brookfield Road, Arnold, Nottingham NG5 7ER. On-site parking is free and plentiful, with good transport links from Derby, Leicester, Birmingham, and Sheffield.

Can my employer pay by invoice?

Yes — when you reach the booking page, select "Business booking" and you'll have the option to request a VAT invoice. We'll issue a formal invoice to your company and confirm the booking once payment is received.
