18th Edition Exam: What to Expect & How to Prepare
Everything you need to know before sitting the City & Guilds 2382-22 exam — format, topics, preparation strategy, and what happens on the day.
Exam Format
The 2382-22 is an open-book exam — you can refer to your copy of BS 7671:2018+A2:2022 (IET Wiring Regulations) throughout. No other notes, textbooks, or electronic devices are permitted.
Topic Weightings
Questions are drawn from across the Wiring Regulations. Here is how the exam typically breaks down by topic area:
How to Prepare
With a 60% pass mark, you need 36 correct answers out of 60. The key is not memorisation — it is knowing where to find answers quickly in BS 7671.
- Get familiar with the BS 7671 book layout — you need to find answers fast under time pressure
- Use the index and table of contents extensively during practice; speed matters
- Focus on Chapters 41 (shock protection) and 7 (special installations) — highest weighting
- Practice with timed mock papers: aim for 45 seconds per question to leave review time
- Tab key regulation numbers you've seen in practice papers for quick lookup
- Understand the difference between requirements (shall) and recommendations (should)
On the Day
In-centre exams: Arrive 15 minutes early with your photo ID (passport or driving licence) and your copy of BS 7671. The invigilator will check your ID and book for unauthorised markings. You will be seated at an individual desk. The 2-hour timer starts once everyone is ready.
Remote exams: Log into the Talview proctoring platform 10 minutes before your slot. You need a Windows PC or laptop (Mac not supported), a webcam, and a phone or tablet as a second camera showing your desk. The invigilator watches live and the session is recorded. Available slots: 8am, 11:30am, or 4pm (Mon–Fri). Book at least 7 working days in advance.
Results: Available immediately after completing the exam. Your digital certificate is typically issued within 48–72 hours.
Who Is This Exam For?
The exam-only option is for electricians who have already studied the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations (BS 7671:2018+A2:2022) and just need to sit the assessment. Common scenarios:
- Self-studied using the IET Wiring Regulations book
- Completed an online or employer-provided 18th Edition course
- Need to resit after a previous failed attempt elsewhere
- Renewing expired certification (the 18th Edition certificate does not technically expire, but many employers and registration schemes require a current pass)
Not ready to sit the exam yet? Our 18th Edition course includes full tuition plus the exam.
After You Pass
Passing the 2382-22 proves you understand the current Wiring Regulations — a requirement for most electrical work. Here is what to do next:
- Update your ECS/JIB card — submit your new certificate to maintain your gold card status
- Notify your competent person scheme — NICEIC, NAPIT, or ELECSA may require proof of current 18th Edition
- Consider next qualifications: 2391 Inspection & Testing, EV Charging (2921), or Solar PV & Battery Storage
Note on Amendment 4:BS 7671 Amendment 4 is expected to take effect in 2026. City & Guilds will introduce a new 2382-26 exam. If you pass the current 2382-22, you will need to sit the updated exam once it becomes mandatory.
