How to Renew Your ECS Card: Steps, Costs & HSEAP Retake
ECS card expired or expiring? Step-by-step renewal guide — HSEAP retake, updated qualifications, costs (~£36), and timeline. Free practice quiz included.
When to Renew Your ECS Card
Most ECS graded cards are typically valid for 3 years from the date of issue. The JIB sends email reminders as your expiry date approaches, but you should not rely on these alone. Set your own calendar reminder for at least two months before your card expires.
There is no grace period. Once your card expires, you lose site access immediately. Most principal contractors will not allow you on site without a valid, in-date ECS card. Even if your renewal is being processed, an expired card means no site entry.
Start Early
Renewal applications take two to four weeks to process. If your HSEAP has also expired, you will need to retake it first — adding another one to two weeks. Start the entire process at least two months before your card expires.
What You Need for Renewal
To renew your ECS card, you need:
- ✓A valid HSEAP pass — the Health, Safety and Environmental Assessment must have been taken within the last 2 years
- ✓Current qualifications — your 18th Edition (BS 7671) must be from the current edition
- ✓Your existing ECS card number (or previous card details if expired)
- ✓A passport-style photo taken within the last 6 months
- ✓The renewal fee — £48 including VAT for a 3-year card (online application)
Applications are submitted online through the JIB website at ecscard.org.uk. Log in to your account, select your card for renewal, confirm your details, and pay the fee. The JIB verifies your qualifications directly with the awarding bodies — you do not need to post certificates.
HSEAP Retake
The HSEAP result is valid for 2 years. If your most recent pass is older than that, you must retake the assessment before your renewal can be processed. The format is the same as the initial test:
- ✓50 multiple-choice questions drawn from 11 topic areas
- ✓30 minutes to complete
- ✓Pass mark: 43 out of 50 (86%)
- ✓Taken online via the MyECS portal or Employer Assessment Portal
Prepare with our free ECS practice quiz — all 327 official revision questions with instant feedback. The questions in the real assessment are drawn from this same bank, so practising with these questions is the best preparation.
Tip
Even if your HSEAP is still within its 2-year validity, it is worth revising before renewal. The pass mark of 86% is high, and regulations may have changed since you last studied. A quick run through the practice quiz will highlight any gaps.
18th Edition Update
Your 18th Edition qualification must be from the current edition of BS 7671. If you originally qualified under a previous amendment and have not updated, you will need to do so before renewal.
The 18th Edition course is a 2-day classroom course with the exam on Day 2. It is also available as an exam-only option if you are confident in the material and just need the certificate. The exam can be sat remotely from home or at our Nottingham centre.

Upgrade Your Card at Renewal
Renewal is a good time to check whether you now qualify for a higher card type. If you have gained additional qualifications since your last card was issued, you can apply for an upgrade rather than a like-for-like renewal.
Common Upgrade Paths
- ✓Registered (Blue) → Gold: if you have completed NVQ Level 3 and the AM2 since your Blue card was issued
- ✓Experienced Worker (Brown) → Gold: if you have completed the Experienced Worker Assessment (EWA)
- ✓Trainee → Registered (Blue): if you have completed Level 2, Level 3, 18th Edition, and 2391
For the full list of qualifications required for each card type, see our Gold Card requirements checklist.
Add Specialist Skills While Renewing
If you are already taking time to sort your qualifications for renewal, consider adding a specialist skill to your profile. Two of the fastest-growing areas in the electrical industry are EV charging and solar PV — both are in high demand and can increase your day rate.
