What Is the ECS Gold Card?

To get a JIB ECS Gold Card you need: Level 2 Diploma (2365), Level 3 Diploma (2365), 18th Edition (2382), NVQ Level 3 (2357), and the AM2 practical assessment — plus a valid ECS Health, Safety and Environmental Assessment. Online applications cost £40 + VAT (£48 including VAT) and the card is valid for 3 years. It is the industry standard proof of full electrical qualification in the UK.

Most principal contractors and major construction sites require a valid ECS card for entry. The Gold Card is the card you are working towards from the moment you start your electrical training — it is the end goal of the qualification pathway.

The Complete Pathway to Gold Card

There is no shortcut to the Gold Card. You need to complete a series of qualifications in order. Here is the full pathway from complete beginner to Gold Card holder.

Step 1: Level 2 Diploma in Electrical Installations (C&G 2365)

The entry-level qualification. No prior experience required. This covers electrical science, health and safety, installation methods, and wiring systems. It gives you the underpinning knowledge to progress to Level 3.

  • Duration: 3 to 6 months (classroom and practical)
  • No prerequisites — open to complete beginners
  • Qualifies you for an ECS Trainee Electrician card (Total Skills sponsors your application)

Step 2: Level 3 Diploma in Electrical Installations (C&G 2365)

Builds on Level 2 with advanced topics: inspection and testing theory, fault diagnosis, electrical design, and complex installations. This is the knowledge qualification — you still need the NVQ (competency) to prove you can apply it on site.

  • Duration: 4 to 8 months
  • Prerequisite: Level 2 Diploma or equivalent
  • Covers the theory needed for the NVQ and AM2

Step 3: 18th Edition Wiring Regulations (C&G 2382)

The BS 7671:2018 (18th Edition) qualification is mandatory for the Gold Card. It covers the current wiring regulations that govern all electrical installation work in the UK. You can study this at any point during your training, but you must hold it before applying for the Gold Card.

  • Duration: 2 days (intensive classroom) with the exam on Day 2
  • Also available as an exam-only option — sit remotely from home or at our Nottingham centre
  • Required for ALL ECS Gold Card applications

Step 4: NVQ Level 3 in Electrical Installation (C&G 2357)

The NVQ is the competency-based qualification that proves you can do the work on site, not just pass exams. An assessor visits you at your workplace to observe your work and review your portfolio of evidence. This is the qualification that separates theory from practice.

  • Duration: 6 to 12 months (evidence gathered while working on site)
  • You must be working in electrical installation to gather evidence
  • An assessor visits your workplace to observe and verify your competence
  • Can be started while completing your Level 3 Diploma

Step 5: AM2 Practical Assessment

The AM2 is the final practical test. It is a one-day hands-on assessment at a NET (National Electrotechnical Training) centre where you demonstrate your ability to install, inspect, and test a real electrical installation under exam conditions.

  • Taken at a NET assessment centre (you book this yourself)
  • Full-day practical assessment covering installation, inspection, and testing
  • Mandatory for the Gold Card — no exemptions
  • Typically taken after or near the end of your NVQ

For more detail on what the AM2 involves and how to prepare, see our AM2 Assessment Guide.

Step 6: ECS Health, Safety and Environmental Assessment

A 50-question multiple-choice assessment taken online via the MyECS portal or Employer Assessment Portal. You need 43 out of 50 (86%) to pass. The questions are drawn from a bank of 327 covering 11 topic areas. Total Skills arranges this assessment for students on our diploma and NVQ courses.

Step 7: Apply for Your Gold Card

Once you have all of the above, apply through the JIB website (ecscard.org.uk). Upload your certificates and the JIB will verify them with the awarding bodies. Your Gold Card is valid for 3 years.

The ECS Trainee Electrician Card

While working towards your Gold Card, you can hold an ECS Trainee Electrician card. This is a white card with a red stripe, issued to people on a formal industry training programme. It allows you to access construction sites while you are still training, provided all work is carried out under supervision.

ECS Trainee Electrician Card — Stage 1

Trainee Card Stages

The Trainee card has three stages, reflecting your progress through training:

  • Stage 1: Enrolled on a formal training programme, employer sponsorship, ECS HSE assessment passed
  • Stage 2: Completed one electrical qualification (e.g. Level 2 Diploma)
  • Stage 3: Working towards NVQ Level 3 and AM2 end point assessment

Total Skills Students

Students enrolled on our Level 2 Diploma, Level 3 Diploma, or NVQ Level 3 courses can apply for an ECS Trainee Electrician card once they have attempted their first exam or assessment. Total Skills sponsors your application — you do not need a separate employer. We arrange the formal ECS HSE assessment for you as part of your training.

Other ECS Card Types on the Pathway

Not everyone goes straight from trainee to Gold Card. Here are the other card types you may encounter on the pathway.

Electrical Labourer Card

For workers in a supportive role assisting electricians with unskilled tasks under supervision. Labourers cannot carry out craft work. This card requires a health and safety qualification and the ECS HSE assessment, or a JIB-approved electrical theory qualification (such as the Level 2 Diploma).

Experienced Worker Card (Brown Stripe)

For electricians who hold a Level 3 technical certificate (such as the Level 3 Diploma) but do not yet have the NVQ Level 3. This card recognises your knowledge qualifications while you work towards full competency. It requires BS 7671 and the ECS HSE assessment.

Experienced Worker Card (Gold Stripe)

For electricians who have enrolled on and are completing the Experienced Worker Assessment (EWA). This is the route for people with years of practical experience who never completed a formal NVQ. The EWA assesses your competence to Level 3 standard, and upon completion you can apply for the full Gold Card.

Experienced Worker Assessment

The EWA is offered by approved providers (such as TESP) and leads to a Level 3 qualification that meets Gold Card requirements. You still need BS 7671 (18th Edition) and the ECS HSE assessment. The EWA route requires underlying qualifications including the Level 2 Diploma, 2391 Inspection and Testing, and 18th Edition.

Legacy Qualifications and the Gold Card

If you trained before the current qualification framework, you may still be eligible for a Gold Card using legacy qualifications. The JIB recognises different pathways depending on when you trained.

Pre-1994 Training

If you completed your training before 1994, you need your Final Apprenticeship Deeds or Apprentice Completion Certificate. A technical certificate alone does not meet the requirements. If you cannot locate your documentation, you may need to take the Experienced Worker Assessment instead.

January 1994 to September 1999

You need City & Guilds 2360 Parts One and Two (Part 2 completed within this date range), plus the AM2 assessment and bona fide employer references covering the last three years.

September 1999 Onwards

You need one of the following plus the AM2 or AM2E assessment:

  • Level 3 NVQ in Electrotechnical Services
  • Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Installing Electrotechnical Systems and Equipment
  • JIB Mature Candidate Assessment

Technical certificates alone (C&G 2351, 2330, 2360) do not meet the Gold Card requirements without the NVQ or equivalent competency assessment.

September 2016 Onwards (Apprenticeship Standard)

Apprentices completing the Level 3 Electrotechnical Qualification must follow the qualification combinations set by industry and complete the AM2S assessment. Upon completion, they can apply directly for the Gold Card plus Registered Electrician status.

Not Sure Which Route Applies to You?

The JIB provides an eligibility checker on the ecscard.org.uk website. Enter your qualifications to see which card you qualify for. If your qualifications predate the current framework, the Legacy Qualifications page on the ECS website lists every accepted combination.

Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifications do I need for an ECS Gold Card?
You need three things: a Level 3 competency-based qualification (NVQ Level 3 in Electrical Installation), a current BS 7671 (18th Edition) qualification, and a pass in the ECS Health, Safety and Environmental Assessment. You also need to have completed the AM2 practical assessment as part of your NVQ pathway.
How long does it take to get an ECS Gold Card from scratch?
Starting from no qualifications, the typical pathway takes 18 to 24 months. This includes the Level 2 Diploma (3 to 6 months), Level 3 Diploma (4 to 8 months), 18th Edition (2 days), NVQ Level 3 (6 to 12 months of on-site evidence gathering), and the AM2 practical assessment. Some steps can overlap, such as starting your NVQ while completing your Level 3 Diploma.
Can I get a Gold Card without the AM2?
No. The AM2 (or AM2S for apprenticeship standard, or AM2E for experienced worker route) is a mandatory practical assessment. It is the final step that demonstrates your hands-on competence. Without it, you cannot get a Gold Card through any route.
What is the difference between an ECS Gold Card and a Trainee card?
The Gold Card (Installation Electrician) is for fully qualified electricians who hold NVQ Level 3, BS 7671, and have passed the AM2. The Trainee Electrician card is a white card with a red stripe, issued to people who are on a formal training programme working towards their Gold Card. All work carried out by a trainee must be under supervision.
Do I need the 2391 Inspection and Testing for a Gold Card?
No, the 2391 is not a Gold Card requirement. The Gold Card requires NVQ Level 3, BS 7671 (18th Edition), the AM2, and the ECS HSE assessment. However, 2391 is strongly recommended as it qualifies you to inspect, test, and certify electrical installations — a key skill for working independently.
Can I get a Gold Card through the Experienced Worker route?
Yes. If you have substantial industry experience but lack the NVQ Level 3, you can take the Experienced Worker Assessment (EWA) through an approved provider. This assesses your practical competence to Level 3 standard. You still need BS 7671 and the ECS HSE assessment. The EWA route is designed for electricians who learned on the job rather than through formal qualifications.
How much does it cost to get an ECS Gold Card?
The card application fee itself is around 30 to 40 pounds. However, the total cost includes the underlying qualifications: Level 2 Diploma, Level 3 Diploma, 18th Edition, NVQ Level 3, and AM2 assessment fees. The ECS HSE assessment also has a separate fee. Check the JIB website (ecscard.org.uk) for the most current card and assessment pricing.
How long is an ECS Gold Card valid?
ECS Gold Cards are valid for 3 years from the date of issue. You can apply for renewal when your card has less than 6 months before expiry. Renewal requires evidence that your qualifications are still current, including a valid HSE assessment taken within the previous 2 years.
