The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero commissioning an independent review into how artificial intelligence is deployed across electricity networks might, at first glance, look like a policy matter for grid operators rather than something that affects the working electrician. In practice, the two are closely linked. The network is being asked to handle a very different pattern of demand from the one it was designed for: heat pumps, EV charge points, domestic battery storage and solar PV all change when and where electricity is drawn and generated. AI and machine learning are increasingly being used to forecast that demand, manage constraints, and decide whether a connection can be accommodated without reinforcement. Any move towards smarter, more automated network management ultimately shapes what is permitted at the customer's meter position, how quickly connections and G98/G99 applications are processed, and how flexible loads such as chargers and storage are expected to behave.
For electricians and trainees, the practical consequence is that installations are becoming part of a managed system rather than isolated pieces of fixed wiring. Load management, demand-side response, smart charging functionality and metering data are already written into requirements such as the Electric Vehicles (Smart Charge Points) Regulations 2021 and reflected in guidance around BS 7671 Section 722 and the requirements for energy storage systems. If networks lean more heavily on data-driven control, competent commissioning, accurate documentation and reliable communication between equipment and the DNO or supplier become part of the job, not an optional extra. That places a premium on installers who understand diversity and maximum demand calculations, earthing arrangements including PEN fault detection, and the inspection and testing regime that proves an installation behaves as designed.
From a career development point of view, this is another signal that the growth areas in the trade sit at the intersection of traditional installation skills and low-carbon technology. The route into that work has not changed: a sound Level 2 and Level 3 grounding, an NVQ and AM2 to achieve full qualified status, current wiring regulations knowledge, and inspection and testing competence, followed by specialist qualifications in EV charging equipment or solar PV and battery storage where you intend to work in those sectors. Reviews of this kind rarely produce immediate changes on site, but they are worth following, because the direction of travel points towards more data, more automation and higher expectations of the competent person signing the certificate.
