Nearly a Quarter of UK Homeowners Use Solar Panels to Increase Property Value

SolarRenewablesIndustry NewsCareersWiring RegulationsInspection Testing
The finding that nearly a quarter of UK homeowners bought solar panels mainly to increase their property's value suggests the market is changing. Solar PV is no longer seen only as a way to cut energy bills or reduce carbon emissions. It is increasingly treated as a home improvement that adds lasting value, much like a new kitchen or an extension. For electricians, this broadens the customer base. Homeowners planning to sell, landlords improving their portfolios and buyers looking at Energy Performance Certificate ratings may all now see solar as worth the investment. As energy efficiency becomes more prominent in property listings and mortgage conversations, demand for competent installers is likely to stay strong rather than rise and fall with energy prices. Homeowners who see their system as an asset that adds value to the property will also care more about the quality and paperwork behind it. Prospective buyers, surveyors and conveyancers increasingly ask for evidence that a system was installed properly. That means MCS certification, Building Regulations compliance documentation, electrical installation certificates and clear records of the system's specification. Poorly installed or undocumented systems can become a problem during a sale, which puts competent, properly qualified installers at a real advantage. A solid grounding in BS 7671, including the requirements for solar PV power supply systems, is essential. So are inspection and testing skills, both to verify new installations and to assess existing systems that may change hands when a property is sold. For trainees and qualified electricians planning their careers, the trend reinforces the value of adding renewable technologies to a core electrical skill set. Many homeowners now ask about battery storage alongside solar panels, as well as how both connect with EV charging and smart energy management. Electricians who can advise on and install complete low-carbon home energy systems will be well placed as this work becomes a routine part of domestic electrical installation. With the Future Homes Standard and wider net zero policy set to push renewables further into the mainstream, building competence in this area now looks like a sound long-term investment.
