Self-Employed Tradespeople Suffer One of the Highest Business Debt Burdens
Industry NewsCareersPay RatesQualifications
Research from Lowell showing that 72% of self-employed workers carry some form of business debt, with some owing more than £100,000 to keep their businesses running, will resonate with many electricians. Self-employment is a common route in the electrical trade, and it brings real upfront costs: a van, test equipment, tools, insurance, Competent Person Scheme registration and ongoing training. Add late payment from clients and the gap between buying materials and being paid for a job, and cash flow can become stretched quickly. That tradespeople are among the hardest hit is not surprising, but it is a reminder that technical skill alone does not guarantee a sustainable business.
For trainees and newly qualified electricians, the findings are worth weighing before going it alone. Many experienced electricians recommend spending time in employment first, completing the NVQ Level 3 and AM2 assessment and building a professional network before setting up independently. That time lets you see how established contractors price work, manage suppliers and handle payment terms. Self-employment can be rewarding, but it is better started with a clear business plan, realistic pricing that covers overheads and quiet periods, and a cash buffer rather than borrowed money.
For those already self-employed, broadening your range of competencies can help reduce reliance on a single type of work and smooth out income across the year. Inspection and testing, for example, supports steady demand for Electrical Installation Condition Reports, including those required in the private rented sector. EV charging and solar PV installation are growth areas as homes and businesses move towards low-carbon technologies. Training is an investment like any other, though, and it is sensible to plan and budget for it with the same care as equipment purchases. That way new qualifications strengthen the business rather than adding to its financial pressure.
