First regional solar breakdown as installations hit record highs

The publication of the first regional breakdown of solar deployment by DESNZ is more significant than it might first appear. Until now, the national picture has told us that solar is growing quickly, but it has said very little about where that growth is actually happening. Regional data changes that. For electricians, it turns a general sense that "renewables are busy" into something far more practical: an indication of which parts of the country are seeing the highest volumes of domestic rooftop installations, where local authority retrofit schemes and social housing programmes are driving demand, and where the installer base may be thinnest relative to the work coming through. If you are weighing up whether to invest time and money in moving into solar PV, that is the kind of intelligence that helps you make an evidence-based decision rather than a hopeful one. Record installation figures also carry a warning as well as an opportunity. Rapid growth in any part of the electrical sector tends to attract entrants who are not always adequately qualified, and solar PV is a discipline where poor workmanship has consequences that go well beyond an underperforming array. DC string design, isolation and labelling, earthing and bonding arrangements, protection against fault current from battery systems, and correct integration with the existing consumer unit are all areas where mistakes create genuine fire and shock risk. That is why the route into solar work sits on top of a proper electrical foundation rather than replacing it. A competent installer is expected to hold a recognised electrical qualification such as the Level 3 Diploma or the 2357 NVQ, to be current on BS 7671 through the 18th Edition, and to be able to inspect, test and certify their own work under the 2391 suite before adding dedicated solar PV and battery storage training and, in most cases, MCS certification through a registered business. For trainees, the wider lesson is about how the modern electrician's role is broadening. Solar, battery storage and EV charging are increasingly installed together on the same property, often as part of a single package alongside heat pumps, and clients expect one contractor who understands how those systems interact with each other and with the incoming supply. Building a career on that basis means treating renewables not as a bolt-on but as an extension of core electrical competence, with the underpinning qualifications in place first. As government data continues to sharpen the picture of where demand is concentrated, those who have already invested in the right combination of installation, regulations, inspection and testing, and low-carbon technology training will be best placed to take advantage of it.
