Legrand Launches Starline T5 DoubleBar, the Highest Ampacity Open-Channel Track Busway with Most Pluggable Space

Legrand's launch of the Starline T5 DoubleBar may look like a product announcement aimed at data centre operators, but it points to a shift that UK electricians should follow closely. AI and high-performance computing are pushing power densities in server halls far beyond what traditional under-floor cabling and fixed distribution were designed for. Overhead track busway systems let operators tap off power wherever racks are positioned and reconfigure layouts without major rewiring, so they are increasingly specified in new builds and refurbishments. The UK government has designated data centres as Critical National Infrastructure and is actively encouraging AI-related investment. As a result, demand for electricians who understand high-current, three-phase distribution in mission-critical environments is likely to keep growing.
For trainees, this is a reminder that the fundamentals taught in a Level 3 electrical installation qualification have very practical applications well beyond domestic work. Three-phase supplies, load balancing, protective device coordination, fault current and earthing arrangements all become critical when a single busway run may be carrying very high currents to densely packed equipment. Busbar trunking systems are manufactured to their own product standards, but their installation still has to comply with BS 7671. A solid working knowledge of the current Wiring Regulations is therefore essential, particularly around selection of protective devices, voltage drop, thermal effects and isolation.
Inspection and testing is another area where this kind of infrastructure raises the bar. Data centres operate on the principle that downtime is unacceptable, so verification of new installations and periodic inspection of live systems demand careful planning, safe isolation procedures and confidence in interpreting test results on high-capacity circuits. Qualified electricians looking to move into commercial or critical-environment work will find that a recognised inspection and testing qualification, combined with demonstrable NVQ-level competence, makes them far more credible to the specialist contractors who deliver these projects. Experience with modular distribution systems such as track busway is also becoming a useful differentiator on a CV.
