The headline figure here — a doubling of the UK data centre lighting market to roughly £130 million by 2030 — is really a proxy for something much bigger. Lighting is one of the smaller line items in a data centre build, so if that segment alone is set to double, it points to a substantial pipeline of hyperscale and colocation projects landing across the UK over the next five years, particularly around West London, Slough, Manchester and the emerging clusters in the North East and Wales. For electricians, that translates into sustained demand for containment, cabling, distribution, UPS and generator interfaces, busbar systems, and the commissioning work that follows. Data centres are also power-hungry in a way few other commercial buildings are, which means high-integrity LV distribution, extensive earthing and bonding provisions, and a level of documentation and verification well beyond a typical commercial fit-out.
For trainees and those early in their careers, this is a useful reminder that the commercial and industrial side of the trade is where a lot of the growth currently sits, and that the route in is the same as it has always been: a solid grounding in the 2365 Level 2 and Level 3 diplomas, followed by the 2357 NVQ Level 3 and AM2 to achieve full qualified status and a gold ECS card. Site access on major data centre projects is tightly controlled, and main contractors are generally unwilling to accept anything less than fully qualified operatives with current cards, so there is little scope for shortcutting the process. Beyond that, the technical demands of these environments reward electricians who can read and work to detailed specifications, understand selectivity and discrimination in complex distribution systems, and work comfortably alongside mechanical and controls teams.
The inspection and testing side deserves particular attention. Data centres run continuously, so initial verification is carried out under intense commercial pressure and periodic inspection has to be planned around load transfers and redundancy rather than shutdowns. Holding the 2391 alongside a current 18th Edition certificate makes an electrician considerably more employable on this type of work, and the emphasis on emergency lighting, escape route illumination and BS 5266 compliance mentioned in the wider lighting discussion means that testing and certification competence extends well beyond the general installation. There is also a growing overlap with renewables and energy storage, as operators look to on-site generation and battery systems to manage grid constraints and carbon reporting, so skills in solar PV and battery storage installation are increasingly relevant to the same client base rather than being a separate domestic niche.
