Great place to do all your electrical courses, The team is amazing from Administration to Tutors, they will do everything to help you pass the course. I've completed, Level 3, 18th Edition, 2391-52 with Total Skills. With no experience in the electrical field, i struggled a little bit with 2391 but the team helped to make me understand and passed the course. Next step is NVQ and EV course.

The Next Step on Your Electrician Journey

The City & Guilds 2365 Level 3 Diploma in Electrical Installations builds on your Level 2 foundation, taking you into advanced electrical theory and hands-on practical skills. This is the second essential qualification on the pathway to becoming a fully qualified electrician with your JIB Gold Card.

Who Is This Course For?

  • Level 2 graduates — If you've completed the 2365 Level 2 Diploma (or equivalent such as 2330 Level 2 or 2360 Part 1), this is your natural next step.

  • Career changers progressing through the pathway — Many of our learners started with no electrical experience at Level 2 and move straight into Level 3 to maintain momentum.

  • Industry workers formalising their qualifications — If you're already working in electrical but need Level 3 to progress towards your NVQ and Gold Card.

  • Employers upskilling their workforce — We work with companies across the UK who book this course for their employees. In-centre practical days can be scheduled flexibly around your business needs, on weekdays or weekends.

How the Course Works

This is a hybrid course combining flexible online theory with intensive hands-on practical training at our Nottingham centre. Study the theory units at your own pace through our online learning platform — available 24/7 on desktop, or via our mobile app for iOS and Android, with no live sessions to attend. When you're ready, book your in-centre practical days at times that suit you.

In-Centre Training & Assessments

You'll need approximately 8 to 9 days at our training centre, depending on your existing practical skills. Level 3 practical work is more intensive than Level 2, covering fault diagnosis and rectification, inspection and testing procedures, and electrical systems design. We offer unlimited training days, so you can attend as many sessions as you need until you feel fully confident, at no additional cost.

In-centre days are available on both weekdays and weekends, giving you complete flexibility to fit training around work or other commitments. For employers booking multiple employees, we can arrange group sessions on dates that work for your team.

The course includes multiple-choice exams which are normally taken at the centre. If you prefer, these can also be sat remotely with online invigilation for a small additional fee.

What You'll Learn

The course covers advanced topics including three-phase electrical systems, power factor correction, and harmonics. You'll develop expertise in fault diagnosis and rectification, learn inspection and testing procedures to BS 7671 standards, and understand how to design electrical installations for domestic, commercial, and industrial environments. You'll also learn to complete and interpret electrical installation certificates, condition reports, and minor works certificates.

Inspection & Testing Skills

A key component of Level 3 is comprehensive training in initial verification and periodic inspection procedures. You'll use industry-standard test equipment including multifunction testers and insulation resistance testers, gaining the practical competence that employers and industry bodies require.

Your Career Pathway

After completing Level 3, you're ready for the City & Guilds 2357 NVQ Level 3 — the workplace-based qualification that, combined with the AM2 assessment, leads to your JIB Installation Electrician Gold Card. This is the standard route for career changers and new entrants to become fully qualified electricians.

ELCAS Funding

This course is eligible for ELCAS (Enhanced Learning Credits) funding for serving and former Armed Forces personnel. Total Skills is an approved ELCAS provider (Provider Number: 12999), offering up to 80% financial support.

Flexible Payment Options

We offer interest-free payment plans with no credit checks required. Pay a deposit to secure your place, then spread the remaining cost over manageable monthly instalments. We also offer a discount for paying in full upfront.

The City & Guilds 2365-03 Level 3 Diploma in Electrical Installations (Buildings and Structures) is a Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) Level 3 qualification regulated by Ofqual (number 600/5499/2). It builds on the Level 2 foundation and covers three-phase systems, fault diagnosis, and installation design — the technical knowledge required for professional electrician status and ECS Gold Card eligibility. The Level 3 is taught to the current BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 (the "Orange Book", Amendment 4) — the live UK wiring regulations standard from April 2026.

Who Is This Course For?

The Level 3 is for anyone who has completed the Level 2 Diploma (or equivalent) and wants to progress towards full electrician status. Most students take the Level 3 immediately after Level 2, either as individual courses or as part of the Level 2 and 3 Diploma Package. The Level 3 is also taken by experienced electrical workers who hold older qualifications and need to update to the current standard — and if you have 5+ years of practising experience with a Level 2, the Experienced Worker Assessment (EWA) is an alternative route that skips the 2365-03 Diploma. You must have a solid understanding of Level 2 content — electrical science, circuit types, and safe working practices — before starting.

Home Study + Online E-Learning

The theory of our Level 3 2365 Diploma is delivered 100% online as a home study e-learning course. You complete the seven mandatory units — Unit 201 (Health & Safety in Building Services Engineering, carried forward from Level 2), 301 (Environmental Technology), 302 (Principles of Electrical Science), 303 (Fault Diagnosis & Rectification), 304 (Inspection, Testing and Commissioning), 305 (Electrical Systems Design), and 308 (Career Awareness) — from anywhere in the UK, at your own pace. The online learning platform runs in any browser and has iOS and Android apps. Expect to put in around 8 hours of self-study per week. Tutor support is available by email and phone whenever you get stuck.

This home study route suits adult learners balancing full-time work, career progressors moving from Level 2 to Level 3 without stopping their current job, and learners outside Nottingham who can travel in for the practical and exam days but don’t want to commute weekly. Part of our home study electrician course range.

Fast-Track Level 3 for Experienced Workers

If you already hold a Level 2 and have been working in the trade — or if you have progressed straight from Level 2 — the fast-track Level 3 route lets you complete the full qualification in 4 to 6 months with flexible attendance. That compares to 1 to 2 years at a local college running evening classes. The difference is the online e-learning platform: you work through the units at your own pace and book practical days and written exams when you are ready, rather than following a rigid term timetable.

Important: Level 3 written exams and practical assessments are sat in person at our Nottingham centre — unlike the Level 2 online tests (which can be taken remotely with online invigilation), the 2365-03 requires in-person attendance per City & Guilds requirements. Most learners combine exam days with practical training days to minimise travel.

What This Qualification Unlocks

The Level 3 Diploma is where you move from understanding how electrical installations work to designing and diagnosing them. The course covers three-phase power systems, complex circuit design, fault diagnosis and rectification, and the principles behind inspection and testing. After completing Level 2 and Level 3, you progress to the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations (2382), 2391 Inspection and Testing, and then the NVQ Level 3 with AM2 assessment — the final steps to your Installation Electrician Gold Card. To register with a competent person scheme (NICEIC or NAPIT) for Part P self-certification, and to issue Electrical Installation Certificates, Minor Works Certificates or EICRs in your own name, you need the NVQ Level 3 plus Gold Card — the diplomas alone are not sufficient for certification authority.

Career and Earning Potential

Holding both the Level 2 and Level 3 Diplomas places you firmly on the Gold Card pathway and qualifies you for higher-paid employed roles while you complete your NVQ. The diploma is a prerequisite for Inspection and Testing (2391), while specialist courses in EV charging (2921) and solar PV now require the NVQ Level 3 as a minimum. Self-employed electricians with the full pathway completed (including NVQ and Gold Card) regularly earn £50,000 and above, with specialists in green technologies charging £300 to £500 per day. The Level 3 course is ELCAS eligible — Armed Forces personnel can access up to 80% funding towards the course fee.

Unit 302 takes the science from Level 2 into the territory a working electrician actually needs: three-phase systems, complex AC circuits, and the machines and components found on commercial and industrial sites. You will understand electrical supply systems from generation through transmission and distribution, the relationship between single-phase and three-phase supplies, and the characteristics of star (wye) and delta connections.

The unit covers how different electrical properties — resistance, impedance, inductance, capacitance, frequency — affect real circuits, systems and equipment. You will learn the operation of DC machines and AC motors (induction, synchronous, single-phase and three-phase), power factor correction, and the electronic components used in motor control, lighting and heating systems.

Topics also include the principles of lighting and heating — lumen method calculations, luminaire selection, LED driver electronics, direct and indirect heating systems — giving you the theoretical grounding for the circuit design work you will meet in Unit 305. Assessed by written exam and a small practical exam.

UNIT 303

Electrical Installations: Fault Diagnosis and Rectification

Fault diagnosis on live electrical installations.

Unit 303 is one of the most practical Level 3 units — fault diagnosis on live electrical installations. You will learn the specific health and safety requirements that apply when diagnosing faults: safe isolation to BS 7671, live working dispensation under EAWR, hazards specific to testing live circuits, and the PPE and test-instrument requirements for fault-finding work.

The unit covers the common fault types encountered on domestic, commercial and industrial installations — open circuits, short circuits, high-resistance joints, insulation breakdown, earth faults, overload faults, transient and intermittent faults — and the diagnostic procedures to isolate each one: logical fault-finding, test-instrument selection (multifunction testers, clamp meters, thermal imaging), circuit diagrams and manufacturer data.

You will also cover the importance of clear reporting and customer communication — what to tell the customer, what goes on the remedial certificate, and when to escalate. The unit is assessed by both a practical exam (under observation) and a written online exam, so you will spend significant time at our Nottingham centre practising real fault-finding before sitting the assessment.

UNIT 304

Electrical Installations: Inspection, Testing and Commissioning

Inspection, testing and commissioning — the Level 3 EIC/EICR foundation.

  • Initial verification steps
  • Dead tests · CPC · ring · IR

You will learn how to prepare for the installation of wiring systems, select the right wiring system for each application, and follow the correct work practices and procedures from site survey through to handover.

The unit covers supply systems and consumer equipment: single-phase and three-phase supplies, consumer unit selection, switchgear, distribution boards and busbar systems. You will learn the full earthing and protection landscape — earthing arrangements (TT, TN-S, TN-C-S), main and supplementary bonding, automatic disconnection of supply (ADS), and the selection of overcurrent protective devices (fuses to BS 88 and BS 3036, circuit breakers to BS EN 60898, RCDs to BS EN 61008 and RCBOs to BS EN 61009).

The design work itself covers circuit design calculations — cable current-carrying capacity using the BS 7671 tables, correction factors (Ca, Cc, Cg, Ci), voltage drop, earth-loop impedance (Zs) and prospective fault current — so you can specify compliant final circuits, distribution circuits and the full installation for a real building. Assessed by practical exam, written paper and online exam.

Does the Level 3 certificate expire?

No. The City & Guilds 2365 Level 3 Diploma in Electrical Installations does not expire — once you achieve it, it's yours for life and does not need resitting. The only part of the electrician pathway that updates over time is the 18th Edition BS 7671 Wiring Regulations. When City & Guilds publish an amendment (the current version is Amendment 4 / BS 7671:2018+A4:2026, the "Orange Book"), working electricians refresh the 18th Edition. Level 2, Level 3 and NVQ qualifications all remain valid indefinitely.

What can I do after Level 3 that I couldn't after Level 2?

Level 3 gives you the advanced technical depth — three-phase systems, fault diagnosis on live installations, inspection and testing theory to BS 7671, and electrical design. It's the knowledge base employers and the NVQ assessor look for, and it opens the door to adding the 18th Edition (2382-26) and 2391-52 Inspection & Testing courses. Important — certification authority: Holding Level 3 + 18th Edition + 2391 alone does NOT mean you can issue certification in your own name. Under current UK rules, to legally issue Electrical Installation Certificates (EICs), Minor Works Certificates, or EICRs as the responsible person — and to self-certify notifiable work under Part P via a competent person scheme (NICEIC, NAPIT, ELECSA) — you also need the NVQ Level 3 (2357) and JIB Gold Card. Level 3 Diploma alone is the technical knowledge layer; the NVQ is what proves on-site competence for certification rights. Most learners progress to the NVQ straight after Level 3, ideally while working in the trade.

Can I take the NVQ Level 3 at the same time as the Level 3 Diploma?

Yes — many learners do both in parallel. The Level 3 Diploma covers the technical theory and practical skills at our Nottingham centre; the NVQ Level 3 (2357) is assessed on real electrical work at your place of employment. Combining them compresses your route to the JIB Gold Card by 6 to 12 months compared to doing them sequentially. You do need to be actively working in the electrical trade during the NVQ — either employed or shadowing a qualified electrician — because the NVQ is built around on-site evidence of real installations.

Are the Level 3 exams remote or in-centre?

The Level 3 written exams and practical assessments are sat in person at our Nottingham training centre. Unlike the Level 2 online tests (which can be taken remotely with online invigilation), the 2365-03 Level 3 qualification requires in-person attendance for both written and practical assessments — this is a City & Guilds requirement for this qualification. Most learners combine exam days with practical training days to minimise travel to Nottingham. The online theory study itself is fully remote — it's only the formal assessments that require in-person attendance.

Is the Level 3 Diploma worth the investment?

The Level 3 is required for the NVQ, AM2, and Gold Card — without it you cannot become a fully qualified electrician or register with NICEIC/NAPIT. At £2,650, the cost is recoverable within the first few months of qualified work at £35,000–£45,000 per year.
