Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifications do I need to take this Solar PV course?

You must hold both: (1) BS7671 18th Edition Wiring Regulations or later, and (2) a JIB Gold Card (Installation, Maintenance, or Domestic Electrician) or an Electrical Installation/Maintenance NVQ. NICEIC or NAPIT membership alone is not acceptable. If you do not yet hold the 18th Edition, we offer an 18th Edition Wiring Regulations course that can be taken before this course.

Is this course MCS approved?

Yes, this course is recognised as demonstrating competence for the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS). Completing both the 2922-34 and 2923-34 qualifications is a key step towards becoming an MCS-certified installer, enabling you to offer customers access to the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) and 0% VAT on domestic installations.

What qualifications will I receive?

You will receive two City & Guilds Level 3 Awards: 2922-34 (Installation and Maintenance of Small Solar Photovoltaic Systems) and 2923-34 (Design, Installation and Commissioning of Small Electrical Energy Storage Systems). Both are Ofqual-regulated qualifications recognised across the UK electrical industry.

How is the course assessed?

Each qualification includes an online multiple-choice knowledge test delivered via the City & Guilds e-volve platform, plus a practical assessment. Our trainers provide comprehensive support throughout, with a 95%+ pass rate on first attempt.

What equipment will I work with during the course?

You will gain hands-on experience with industry-standard equipment including solar panels (monocrystalline and polycrystalline), string inverters, hybrid inverters, microinverters, optimisers, lithium-ion battery storage systems, isolators, DC and AC cabling, mounting systems, and all associated testing equipment.

Can I take the Solar PV course without the Battery Storage course?

We recommend the combined course for best value and comprehensive training. However, if you already hold one qualification and need the other, please contact us to discuss options. Most MCS installers require both qualifications as battery storage is increasingly bundled with solar installations.

What are the job prospects after completing this course?

Excellent! The UK solar industry is projected to support 60,000+ jobs by 2035. New homes will require solar panels from 2027, and the government targets 40GW of solar capacity by 2030. Qualified installers typically earn £35,000-£55,000+ annually, with self-employed installers often earning more.

How do I become MCS certified after completing this course?

After passing both qualifications, you can apply for MCS certification through an approved certification body. You will need to demonstrate competency (which these qualifications provide) and have robust Quality Management Systems (QMS) in place. Many installers initially work under an MCS umbrella scheme while building their portfolio.

Where is the training centre and is parking available?

Our training centre is at Brookfield Road, Arnold, Nottingham NG5 7ER, with free on-site parking for all learners. We're in Arnold, just north of Nottingham city centre, easily accessible from the M1 (Junction 26), A60, and A614. The combined 5-day course costs £975. You can secure your place with a deposit, with the balance due before your course start date. We also offer employer invoicing for company-funded training. Contact us on 0115 666 2366 to discuss the payment arrangement that works best for you.

How often do you run this course?

We run the Solar PV and Battery Storage course monthly throughout the year, with dates scheduled well in advance. Class sizes are limited to a maximum of 8 learners per cohort, so we recommend booking early to secure your preferred dates. Check the schedule section on this page for the next available dates and remaining availability.

City & Guilds vs EAL vs BPEC vs LCL Awards — which solar qualification?

Several awarding bodies offer MCS-qualifying solar PV qualifications: City & Guilds 2922-34, EAL (code 600/5175/9), BPEC (NOS Mapped), and LCL Awards (code 600/5775/0). The key difference is that City & Guilds certificates do not expire, while BPEC and LCL Awards require periodic renewal. C&G is also the most widely recognised by employers and allows solar PV and battery storage to be completed in a single 5-day course.

What is MCS certification and how does it relate to this course?

MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) certification allows your customers to access the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) — payments from energy suppliers for excess solar electricity exported to the grid. Completing this course is a key step towards MCS certification. It also qualifies you for the ECO4 scheme (Energy Company Obligation) and local authority retrofit programmes, opening access to government-funded installation work.

How much can I earn from battery storage installations?

A typical domestic solar PV installation commands £3,000–£6,000, with battery storage adding £2,000–£4,000 per job. MCS-certified solar and battery storage installers earn £40,000–£55,000 per year employed, with self-employed installers earning significantly more.
